Egyptian Cinema

Egypt’s eighty-year relationship with cinema has dominated film theatres across the Middle East for decades. With the ‘Golden Age’ of the 1950s long gone and the production drought of the 1980s finally over, the industry is re-emerging and again establishing Cairo as the entertainment capital of the Arab world. Increased financing from throughout the Middle East has bought Egypt’s production houses back into business, and with it thousands of jobs. The nadir of 1997 when only 16 films were produced is forgotten and ten years on the industry is reviving with over forty films produced in 2007.
